Sectoral Coordination - Health and Nutrition

The Southern Sudan Health NGO Forum has been operating since 2005. It was set up to facilitate communication between non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and to enable NGOs to decide on a consensus of opinion to feed into the Health and Nutrition Consultative Group (HNCG). Initially it met in Nairobi, but has been meeting in Juba since mid 2006. It supports the efforts of the approximately 120+ NGOs delivering health services to people in Southern Sudan.

Sectoral Coordination – Emergency Preparedness and Response

OCHA - Emergency Preparedness and Response Unit (EP&R)

Historical Perspective
  • EP&R unit - established by OLS Consortium in 2000 to address need for coordinated response to emergencies
  • Unit operated under the leadership of Oxfam with participation of other agencies
  • After signing of CPA, the Unit relocated to OCHA, which established a presence in Southern Sudan - initially with Oxfam leadership, which was taken over by OCHA
 What we do
  • The EP&R Unit promotes prompt, effective and concerted country-level response in man-made and natural disasters in Southern Sudan.
  • The Unit is focusing focus primarily on:
         strengthening emergency preparedness and response capacities of the GOSS and local institutions;
         monitoring and response to inter-communal conflicts;
         promoting coordinated response to epidemic disease outbreaks;
         supporting humanitarian financing and;
         facilitating information management processes (with IMU).
         The coordination of emergency response

Linkages – UN/NGO
  • To strengthen EP&R support the government and UN/NGO sector leads in inter- and intra-sectoral coordination in key sectors:
  • UN and NGO seconded staff to EP&R Unit – a crucial component
  • Seconding institutions include:
         Oxfam - emergency preparedness + watsan
         MedAir - health/epidemics
         UNJLC – logistics, particularly flood response

The EP+R Unit is located at the OCHA compound, Juba.
