Southern Sudan NGO Forum
- Governed by 12 elected NGO Steering Committee members.
- NGO Secretariat since 2008.
- Over 200 indigenous & international NGOs committed to meeting needs of communities in Southern Sudan up to 2011 & beyond.
- Representing NGOs working in hard-to-reach locations, providing essential services directly to beneficiaries and linking with local governments.
Mapping the NGO Forum
1) NGO Forum
- The NGO Forum meets on a monthly basis in Juba (first Wednesday of each month).
- The NGO Forum has a google group for sharing of information.
- The NGO Forum is expanding to State meetings with State NGO focal points.
2) NGO Country Directors
- Monthly strategic Country Directors meeting (1.5 hrs max.) of named representative/alternate only (last Thursday of each month).
- There is a google group mailing list specifically for NGO Country Directors
- Agreed that from 2009 the NGO Country Directors group elect the NGO Forum Steering Committee Members on an annual basis.
- The NGO Forum Steering Committee reports directly to the NGO Country Directors.
3) NGO Health Forum
- The NGO Health Forum meets on a monthly basis to support information sharing among the 120+ NGOs involved in health services (last Thursday of each month).
- The NGO Health Forum has a google group for sharing of information.
4) Indigenous NGO Forum
- Indigenous NGO Forum currently has 108 members in the mailing list.
- Indigenous NGO Forum has 11 Steering Committee members base in Juba and 10 state focal points base in respective states of south Sudan.
- Indigenous NGO Steering Committee meets twice a month (2nd / 4th Wed of each month).
- Indigenous NGO Forum meeting is held on monthly basis (first Saturday of each month)
- Google groups mailing list for indigenous NGOs managed by Secretariat Assistant Coordinator.
5) NGO Security
- Bi-weekly NGO Security meetings for NGO Security Focal Points convened by NGO SFP / NGO Secretariat. The meeting includes a briefing by UN Security.
- There is a security mailing list accessible for NGO Security Focal Points.
6) NGO HR Forum
- The NGO HR Forum meets on a bi-monthly basis to support information sharing
- The NGO HR Forum has a google group for sharing of information.
External stakeholders
- UN: members / observers of the UNCT and SMT.
- Monthly meetings with UN DRC/HC, UNMIS Regional Coordinator (also DDO), and Joint Donor office
- Members/observers on SRF, BSF, CHF, MDTF Steering Committees
- Full NGO participation in GoSS Budget Sector Working groups
- Liaison with Ministry of Regional Cooperation, Governors, Southern Sudan Relief & Rehabilitation Commission (SSRRC)
- Attendance at the GoSS/Donor Forum, and Governor’s Forum
Future priorities
- Better engagement with GoSS
- Improving links with INGO SC North
- Briefing papers, strategic documents etc
- Using the seat we have at the table through targeted advocacy
- NGO Forum member feedback to inform position papers (esp. funding mechanisms); evidence-based research
- State representation and increased civil society participation
