Key tasks of the Southern Sudan NGO Forum Secretariat include coordination, information sharing, advocacy, production of policy and position papers, engagement of the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS), donors, the UN community and others on issues of vital humanitarian, recovery, and development concern. The Secretariat provides this support for the over 150 international and national NGOs active in Southern Sudan.

In addition to internal NGO coordination, the Southern Sudan NGO Forum represents NGO interests through membership or observer status at the Steering Committees of the following pooled funds: Basic Services Fund (BSF), Sudan Recovery Fund (SRF), Multi-Donor Trust Fund (MDTF) and Common Humanitarian Fund (CHF). The Southern Sudan NGO Forum is a full member of the UN Country Team and is represented at the Security Management Team (SMT).
